alastair mackie’s amorphous organic, part of the art of chess series, was shown at reykjavik art museum earlier this year - constructed from bog oak, brass, glass, bulbs, batteries, and insects, it was influenced by seeing the amber collection in the department of palaeontology at london’s natural history museum - each piece encapsulates a single suspended insect, some millions of years old - this is the battle of flight versus ground-based insects, so next time you squash a bluebottle…

a light box has been set into the surface of the table to illuminate the insects trapped in the clear amber pieces, and specimen drawers in the side of the table house the pieces out of play
